Suicide bombers the focus of Project Kalkan meeting

Get free weekly news by e-mailSuicide bombers, particularly the relatively new phenomenon of female attackers, were a focal point of discussions during the second working group meeting for Project Kalkan, Interpol’s anti-terrorism initiative for Central Asia.

The meeting, held from 1 st – 2nd February in Baku, Azerbaijan, brought together 55 participants from 26 countries to discuss such issues as the financing of terrorism, terrorists’ use of forged passports and terrorist groups’ recruitment methods.

Participants agreed on the following recommendations at the conclusion of the meeting:

* Member countries are urged to share information and intelligence on profiles of suicide attackers and the patterns of suicide terrorism.

* Member countries are strongly encouraged to utilise and submit information to Interpol databases, in particular, the stolen travel documents database, and provide information in relation to stolen motor vehicles in their countries.

* Member countries are requested to demonstrate a commitment to checking their intelligence databases, including border entry and exit records, in regards to suspected Al Qaeda members.

* Member countries are strongly encouraged to block or monitor terrorist websites.

* Participants of Project Kalkan are strongly urged to obtain access to I-24/7 (Interpol’s global police communications system) through their NCBs.
