Global Health Security Initiative agrees bioterror and pandemic ‘flu action plans

Get free weekly news by e-mailMembers of the Global Health Security Initiative (GHSI) met recently in Rome to discuss the international response to deliberate actions, such as terrorism, and naturally occurring threats to global health, such as pandemic 'flu.

Actions agreed included:

* Comparing national 'flu pandemic plans to share information and expertise, and to better understand different approaches to pandemic planning;

* Working with WHO to develop and test protocols for early containment across a full range of public health interventions, including medical counter measures and equipment;

* Further developing risk communication tools to ensure decision makers and health professionals have consistent information internationally to help manage a 'flu pandemic and ensure the public are kept fully informed of action to take in a pandemic situation;

* Developing, with WHO, approaches to improving capacity and access to vaccines; and

* Working together to prepare for the Beijing pledging conference in January 2006, to have a clear outline of prioritised action which is essential to attract the funding for implementation by multinational organisations.

The GHSI was launched at a meeting of international health ministers in Ottawa. Membership includes representatives of the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico and United States together with the World Health Organisation and the European Commission for Health.
