The Business Continuity Institute and the Disaster Recovery Institute International have set up a joint working group to review the current business continuity Professional Practices . These cover the competencies required by a professional practitioner in order to deliver effective business continuity management.
The joint team is made up of Dan Bailey, Brian Calabrese, Ian Clark, Jim Crosson, Elizabeth Gravois, Terri Kirchner, Carol Moffitt, Paul Wright and Michele Turner.
According to the BCI and DRII the team will work within the following parameters (verbatim):
Mission:
* Diversity is a must given that business continuity management continues to be intertwined in both our business and personal lives. As our lives and the world we live in evolve so too must our approaches and solutions.
* Organizations as a whole are susceptible to similar adversities (– i.e. natural, accidental, deliberate, risks, etc…), therefore all cultures and industry sectors share the fact that NO ONE IS EXEMPT!
Scope:
* Both BCI and DRII are united and committed to maintaining sound Professional Practices for the Business Continuity industry and as such jointly conduct periodic reviews to ensure that the Professional Practices appropriately reflect and incorporate business needs in the world we live in today.
* The review is limited to the current Professional Practice areas and related documentation such as the overview, introduction and details, including the definition of Business Continuity Management. In addition, this effort acknowledges the current industry glossary initiative underway and where appropriate can adopt and/or influence terminology to ensure consistency across BCM and related industries.
* While the current Professional Practice areas are the basis for certification, this review does NOT look at the certification process by either organization. Should there be additions / modifications / deletions to the Professional Practice areas, they are then incorporated into the relevant certification processes as a separate initiative and communication would be provided accordingly.
Objectives:
* Business Continuity Management will continue to be business centric while acknowledging the importance of Information Technology as a support for sound business practices.
* Consider cultural diversity within BCM including social responsibility and the human element
* Consider increased focus in the areas of Privacy and Data Integrity, Logical and Physical Security, Social Responsibility and Business Ethics, etc, while recognizing that other standards and/or associations are dedicated to those disciplines
Timeline:
* February 2006
Finalize review and communicate to BCI and DRII for concurrence and approval by end of month
* March 2006
Launch revised Professional Practices during DRJ conference and on websites.
