India floods cause huge business continuity problems

Get free weekly news by e-mailMassive rainfall totals over the past couple of days have resulted in major business continuity problems for companies based in Mumbai and other parts of the western India region. India Daily reports that many people have been killed and 48,000 evacuated from the area.

995mm of rain fell in 24 hours, causing flash floods, landslides and physical damage to buildings and critical infrastructure. Telephone and power supplies have been cut, roads blocked, and rail and air transport disrupted.

India Daily reports that a one-day emergency public holiday has been declared in the affected areas of Mumbai, Thane and Raigadh. Although aimed at allowing people a chance to start personal disaster recovery activities, the measure will further complicate company attempts to restore business continuity.

The disaster may have a knock-on impact on Western companies, with many outsourcing call centre and other activities to Mumbai-based providers.
