G8 summit blockades cause business continuity problems

Get free weekly news by e-mailMany businesses in Scotland and the wider UK have experienced logistical and supply chain difficulties as a result of widespread road closures in the area surrounding Gleneagles.

Roads, including major motorways, were blocked by protestors attempting to disrupt the G8 summit by preventing back-room staff and members of the summit’s entourage from reaching the venue at Gleneagles.

Some local businesses were also disrupted after being attacked by small groups of protestors. A Burger King restaurant and a PC World store were both closed after windows were broken and slogans daubed on the walls of their premises

Further disruption is likely to occur tomorrow and Friday. Protest websites have highlighted the following scheduled events which are likely to have an impact on business continuity due to either direct action against businesses or due to secondary impacts on the supply chain and logistics operations:

* Wednesday 6th July: Culmination of ‘The Long Walk To Justice’, with hundreds of thousands of people encouraged to converge in Edinburgh. The event will link informally into a Live 8 pop concert taking place in the vicinity.

* Thursday 7th July: Earmarked for continuing blockades and ‘decentralised actions'.

* Friday 8th July: the final day of the summit will see protests themed around climate change. Blockades are not forecast for this day, but attention is likely to turn to direct protest against local businesses perceived to be ‘climate criminals’. A list of potential targets can be viewed in the following document http://archive.corporatewatch.org/g8/g8report.pdf
