Amicus the UK's largest private sector union
is holding a conference on the treat of terrorist attacks and what
employers are doing to minimise risks to their workforce. The conference,
which is taking place today at Amicus-MSF Centre, London, will be
attended by over 100 Amicus representatives from the Manufacturing
industry, finance sector, the NHS, civil air transport and the nuclear
industry.
Roger Lyons, Amicus joint general secretary
will be making the keynote speech. He will warn that UK employers
are failing to develop and inform their staff of contingency plans
in the event of terrorist attacks in this country. He will state
that:
“Amicus members work in a wide variety
of organisations from defence contractors to the NHS, where it is
imperative that their employers not only have contingency plans
but also fully brief staff on what risk they are under. Many of
our members have been denied this information from their employers
on the basis that it may panic staff.”
“This is not acceptable; Amicus wants
all employers to fully consult with the health and safety representatives
and to test their plans in the same way as, for example, fire drills,
which are enshrined in current health and safety laws.”
“I am calling on all employers
to meet their duty of care towards their staff by fully consulting
and testing contingency plans.”
