Changing threat landscape prevents a serious business continuity challenge
63 percent of survey respondents believe that security threats to their organisations are becoming increasingly sophisticated. This is aided and abetted by a severe lack of employee awareness and training, with 48 percent of respondents stating that this is a weakness in their organisation. Commonly listed threats included: poor screening of new employees; lackadaisical subcontractor controls; security-ignorant employees and deficient management processes. These internal issues were at the root of most security breaches.

Specific statistics of interest include:

  • 33 percent of respondents have done nothing to protect themselves from internal wireless communication exposures
  • Only 38 percent run scans to identify rogue wireless networks
  • Only 65 percent of organisations have trained employees on how to identify and report suspicious activity.

The jury’s out on compliance
Only 17 percent of respondents deem that government security-driven regulations are ‘very effective’ in enhancing organisational security or reducing data protection risks. 50 percent see such regulations as ‘effective’. Only 37 percent of respondents feel that such activities are leading to a sustainable and effective solution.
