New types of insidious programs are burrowing into a variety of embedded systems in cars and cellphones. The issue is being addressed by a Carnegie Mellon research team which has developed new software designed to deal with the threat.
Dubbed SWATT, short for SoftWare-based ATTestation, the software can help alert users that their cellphone or car computer has been invaded by an unwanted rogue virus.
SWATT can verify the code running on any given remotely embedded system and can detect the presence of any virus: simple viruses can be detected through their altered memory contents, while more advanced viruses will be detected because they slow down code verification.
