Government
panel to develop business continuity guidelines and benchmarking
system.
The Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun
has reported that the country’s government is to ask an advisory
panel to draft a benchmarking rating-system by this August to help
assess the business continuity preparedness of the nation’s
private businesses. The panel will also draft business continuity
and disaster recovery guidelines for companies to follow.
The Japanese government is expected to
use the rating-system and its associated guidelines to encourage
companies across the country to focus on the importance of business
continuity. Anecdotal figures quoted by the newspaper point to only
21 percent of companies having a disaster recovery plan for a natural
calamity, something which is of great concern to the government
in a country which is at such a high risk of earthquake damage.
According to Asahi Shimbun the government
hopes that companies that are seen publicly to be well prepared
against disaster will be better trusted by their clients and will
therefore have a competitive advantage over less well-prepared businesses.
