Rebels raise the stakes in Nigeria

Get free weekly news by e-mailOil companies operating in Nigeria have been warned by the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force that they have until 1st October to remove staff from the Niger Delta region or face having them targeted by the group’s fighters.

In a communiqué issued last week the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force said that from the beginning of October it will be launching an "all-out war on the Nigerian state". The communiqué advised all oil companies to cease production by 1st October and told companies that, while the group would not damage oil installations because it did not want to pollute the Delta environment, they would target foreign oil workers.
