Mazda Motor Corporation and NEC Corporation announced yesterday
that Mazda will test grid computing technology, which will be incorporated
into its core system, in order to efficiently utilise the IT resources
of many servers in various locations and provide countermeasures
in case of disasters. NEC will assist Mazda in the construction
and evaluation of the trial system. The trial will be one of the
first attempts to use grid technology in a corporate core IT system.
Mazda sees the main benefits being the more efficient and cost
effective use of IT resources coupled with the ability to provide
continued computing operations should part of the company be affected
by a disaster. Mazda hopes that the grid-based system will mean
that the company no longer needs to operate conventional disaster
recovery hot-sites.
If the trial proves to be effective, Mazda will consider applying
the business grid to its company-wide IT infrastructure.
