Larry
Kalmis, chairman of the Business Continuity Institute, provides
an update on the current BCI situation.
The Business Continuity Institute, as a membership
owned organisation, is ten years old this year. It gives me great
pleasure to report that 2003 was BCl's most successful financial
year to date. We have achieved much success in focusing on the continuation
and expansion of membership services. While the BCI does not exist
to make money, membership and sponsor revenues do provide the where-with-all
to maintain and expand Institute activities. A strong financial
position creates a stable foundation on which we can build as we
turn our attention to future strategy and investment.
On the other hand, we have recently seen the
departure of three individuals who have played significant roles
in BCI history. All have made significant contributions to BCI growth.
We would not be where we are today without their contributions.
They will all be missed.
John and Ann Sharp, CEO and administration
manager were with the BCI for nearly seven years and have left to
pursue new endeavours. John has been our CEO through our most formative
years and has seen the BCI grow to the Institute we have today with
its international reputation and sphere of influence. We wish them
both well.
Also leaving the BCI is Tony Shepherd who has
been with the BCI since before it became a member owned organisation
ten years ago. He has provided wise council and helped us to steer
a sound financial course and has most recently served as the Institute's
finance director and company secretary.
The Institute has been in the midst of a difficult
transition period these past few months and we are a bit late in
launching some of the initiatives we promised. Nevertheless June
finds us with a new office, new staff, and a renewed dedication
to be the leading force in the furtherance of the business continuity
profession. The BCI has recently expanded its certification programme
with the launch of the Specialist grade. 2004 will see the BCI hold
its Annual General Meeting and Symposium in Vienna. With increasing
demand for the development of business continuity professionals,
look for expanded BCI educational endeavours and other initiatives
world-wide as we turn our attention to future strategy and investment.
We have recently hired new membership services
and administrative staff: Lorraine Darke, membership services director
and Donna Crabtree, administration manager. They will be based in
the new BCI offices in Reading. We will soon begin our search for
an additional senior executive to focus on the development of the
BCI brand and international expansion of the Institute.
