Nigerian
businesses are stockpiling fuel and other suppliers in preparedness
for a nationwide general strike due to start at midnight.
According to Aljazeera the action is against
rising petrol prices in the country. The Arabic news service reported
that Nigerian union leaders said “there was nothing government
could now do, short of immediately slashing pump prices, to avert
a shut-down.”
As well as having a major impact on businesses in the region the
strike could also force world oil prices higher. Nigeria is the
world’s sixth largest oil producer.
