Interesting article - time to "accentuate the positive...."!!

The international issue is one that obviously affects us here in Australia, but we are experiencing increasing interest in Business Continuity Institute membership (especially within the ACT where I am the founding Leader of the BCI Forum and where much interest comes from Commonwealth Government agencies). The provision of quality, internationally sourced information is a key facility sought by our membership, but it is the professional recognition of their skills which probably rates most highly. BCI's involvement in developing and publishing business continuity management guidelines, as well as guiding standards are also considered to be critical activities. Perhaps a simple and relatively low cost assist to international groups might be to provide copies of BCI videos and collateral (e.g. templates) to overseas forums – this could offset some of the other benefits which are of little value (e.g. reduced fees for conference attendance).

I would have some concerns about any attempt to merge with DRII. Our differentiator is the clear requirement for practitioners to be able to prove substantial experience - not entry by being good at exams!! That said, DRII is starting to get quite aggressive in its marketing so we need to understand and enunciate our position and strategy.

I do share some concerns re: decision making and the board must act quickly to resolve this issue. The process must then be clearly presented to members.

John and Ann have done a great job - they will be sorely missed, but life goes on and we have the premier international BCM organisation!

I echo Julia Graham's endorsement of the final paragraph in your interesting and informative article. The new management team will have a tough challenge maintaining a good balance between objective professional independence and commercial pressures. I believe there is an implied obligation on all members to be supportive and to contribute where it is reasonable for them to do so. (Thus speaks one guilty party who regrettably finds it all too easy to allow inertia to overcome action ...)
