May
Day protests are expected to take place in over 200 cities around
the world, with anarchists, anti-capitalist and other left wing
groups using the day as a focus for expressing their concerns to
the wider world.
In the past few years many May Day events have
been large-scale and have often resulted in damage to business premises
and subsequent business continuity problems. However, this year’s
events are expected to be much lower key.
In the UK the MayDay Collective decided to
cancel plans for a major protest and instead have opted for a variety
of celebratory events, with the main focus being a picnic in St
James’s Park. The largest event in the UK is expected to take
place in Bradford.
May Day is being given a higher profile in
Ireland, where the Taoiseach has told the Dáil that all Garda
leave has been cancelled to enable effective policing of May Day
protests in Dublin.
