Inspector Morse on BS 25999…

Get free weekly news by e-mailScoop! A recently unearthed script ‘discovered’ by Oxford Continuity’s Paul Humphreys provides a snippet from an unknown episode of television’s Inspector Morse, where Morse discusses BS 25999 with his assistant Lewis.

BS25999 takes some thinking about Lewis, says Inspector Morse.

Morse: To plan to cycle from John O'Groats to Land's End, Lewis, is different from cycling from John O'Groats to Land's End.

Lewis: Sir?

Morse: It's all about planning.

Lewis: I'm not with you Sir.

Morse: I won't always be here to explain every little detail Lewis. You'll have to think for yourself one day.

Lewis: It's unthinkable Sir.

Morse: Quite so, Lewis.

Lewis: I mean that you won't be around Sir. It's unthinkable that you won't be around.

Morse: But I suppose the brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past.

Lewis: That's very profound Sir. Aristotle?

Morse: BS 25999 Lewis. The new standard for BCM. I expect you know all about it.

Lewis: I've not seen it this morning. BC-what is it?

Morse: M. B-C-M. M for mother. Actually B-C-M-S, S for sugar as well.

Lewis: You mean Bravo, Charlie, Mike, Sierra?

Morse: Whatever. They'll all want one. Mark my words. I've seen it coming. I'll be gone, so it'll be up to you Lewis.

Lewis: I won't let you down Sir. Can you give me a primer, while you're still here, like?

Morse: Don't be flippant, Lewis. When I was up at Oxford in the fifties, the Master told me “Think, young Mr Morse, think. Then plan, then do, then check, then act, and you won't go far wrong.”

Lewis: Sounds like wise words, Sir.

Morse: It's what we detectives are supposed to do Lewis. Think. We try to work it out. We use our brains. We try to unravel the mystery of it all by thinking. It may be something back from the forgotten past, but remember those words from the Master Lewis, they're a good clue to what it's all about.

Lewis: Plan. Do. Check. Act.

Morse: Well remembered Lewis. Exegi monumentum aere perennius. I have erected a monument more lasting than bronze.

Lewis: Aristotle?

Morse: Horace.

Lewis: Best we get on, Sir?

Morse: Quite so, Lewis. Let's get on for now. Your round, I believe.
