FEMA administrator Craig Fugate swears in Tony Russell as new Region VI administrator
On December 16th FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate swore in Tony Russell as the new regional administrator of FEMA Region VI at the regional headquarters in Denton, Texas. Mr. Russell, whose official first day as Region VI Administrator will be Monday, December 21st, has coordinated the federal disaster response and recovery support to state and local emergency management officials as a Federal Coordinating Officer (FCO) from FEMA Region VIII for more than six years. He has managed a diverse collection of complex disasters and emergencies in Washington, Texas, Alabama, South Dakota, North Dakota, Illinois, New Mexico, and Montana, among others. http://www.fema.gov/about/regions/index.shtm

Disaster Recovery Stakeholder Forum takes place in Los Angeles
On November 17, in Los Angeles, The Long Term Disaster Recovery Working Group held the third of five planned stakeholder forums designed to encourage stakeholders to provide direct input and ideas for disaster recovery. The Working Group previously met with stakeholders to gather input and ideas in New York City on Nov. 10 and in New Orleans on Nov. 4. The public is also encouraged to visit DisasterRecoveryWorkingGroup.gov to provide input on the same 16 specific questions posed to stakeholders at the Working Group meetings. Upcoming stakeholder meetings will take place in Salt Lake City (Nov. 19) and Memphis (Nov. 23).

Tsunami hits Samoa islands
An earthquake off the Samoa coast resulted in a large tsunami which caused widespread damage and many deaths in the Samoa islands. As well as damage to roads and property, the electricity infrastructure has been severely impacted as has the fresh water supply system. More details.

FEMA announced that federal disaster aid has been made available for the territory of American Samoa. This assistance will provide immediate resources to address response, including urgent life sustaining and public health and safety measures. Fugate named Kenneth R. Tingman as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area. Pitt Review progress report published
