US National Flood Insurance Program to be extended for five years
On June 29th the US Congress passed the Surface Transportation Extension Act of 2012 that includes a five-year extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Under the bill the NFIP is reauthorized until September 30, 2017. The final step is for the bill to be signed into law by President Obama which is expected to happen in the next few days.

Department of Health and Human Services grants bolster US health care and public health disaster preparedness
The US Department of Health and Human Services has awarded more than $971 million in grants for health sector disaster preparedness work. The funding awards included a total of approximately $352 million awarded for the Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) cooperative agreement and more than $619 million awarded for the Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) cooperative agreement. DHS announces more than $1.3 billion in fiscal year 2012 Preparedness Grant Awards
DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano has announced the final allocations for seven FY 2012 Preparedness Grant programs, totaling more than $1.3 billion to assist states, urban areas, tribal and territorial governments, non-profit agencies, and the private sector in strengthening the US's ability to prevent, protect, respond to, and recover from terrorist attacks, major disasters and other emergencies in support of the National Preparedness Goal. Major disaster declared for Florida
FEMA has announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to the State of Florida and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by Tropical Storm Debby beginning on June 23, 2012, and continuing. Gracia B. Szczech has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area. http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=63796

Major disaster declared for Colorado
FEMA has announced that federal disaster assistance has been made available to Colorado to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by the High Park and Waldo Canyon Fires beginning on June 9, 2012, and continuing.
