The Neverfail Group has announced the appointment of Basem Al Kayuali as regional director for its Middle East and Africa operations. In his new position, Al Kayuali will lead the company's expansion plan in the region through local resellers and distributors. On the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Indiana is launching the Indiana Water/Wastewater Agency Response Network (InWARN) to make statewide response to disasters quicker and more effective. The European Commission have been informed by the German authorities of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza on a duck farm in Bavaria, in a region where infected wild birds were detected in July and early August. Upon suspicion of the virus, the German authorities immediately applied the necessary control measures laid down under EU legislation. Diagnostic tests carried out by Germany’s national laboratory confirmed the virus to be the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. More information.

FEMA has announced that federal disaster aid has been made available for the state of Nebraska to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area struck by severe storms and flooding during the period of June 11-16, 2007. http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=39371
US HHS secretary Mike Leavitt has announced that the department is making available another $75 million to states, territories and four metropolitan areas to help strengthen their capacity to respond to a pandemic influenza outbreak.
The supplemental funding will be used to:
- Establish or enhance stockpiles of critical medical equipment and supplies;
- Continue development of plans for maintenance, distribution and sharing of those resources;
- Plan for and develop pandemic alternate care sites; and
Conduct medical surge exercises.
The one-time pandemic influenza response planning grants will
supplement the $430 million HHS announced on June 28, 2007, to strengthen the ability of hospitals and other health care facilities to respond to bioterror attacks, infectious diseases, and natural disasters that maycause mass casualties.
