ICMA proposes networked approach to emergency management
Teams of trained and certified local government professionals working in partnership could provide fast and effective assistance to disaster-stricken communities, according to an analysis by the ICMA, the US-based local government leadership and management organization. ICMA's Governmental Affairs and Policy Committee has released a new white paper, ‘A Networked Approach to Improvements in Emergency Management,’ that urges changes at the national level and fleshes out the proposed new model: download it from here.

WHO Influenza Pandemic Task Force holds first meeting
The World Health Organization (WHO) Influenza Pandemic Task Force (IPTF) met for the first time on 25th September at WHO Headquarters in Geneva . The Task Force, whose current full membership is 21 members, has been established to comply with the 2006 World Health Assembly Resolution It will advise WHO on potential public health issues of international concern related to avian and pandemic influenza, including issues such as the appropriate phase of pandemic alert, the declaration of an influenza pandemic, and appropriate international response measures to a pandemic.

Risk appetite: Australian CEOs are more risk-taking than Americans
A study comparing Australian CEOs with US business leaders has found that the Americans are ‘more conservative and buttoned down’, while the Australians are ‘more fun-loving and risk-taking’. The research is described as the first major study of its kind of Australian CEOs. The findings are based on results of three personality assessments administered by US-based Hogan Assessment Systems.

  

NASA launches hurricane data portal
A new web portal has been created by NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center, Greenbelt, Md, for viewing and studying hurricanes with a variety of measurements from satellite-based NASA instruments. The Hurricane Web Portal consists of several components. ‘Current Conditions’ on the Overview page and the Image Gallery shows the latest maps and profiles of pre-selected regions updated daily. Event-based data featuring pictures, animations and summaries of current and past tropical storms or hurricanes is another component. http://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov/hurricane/index.shtml
